What an extraordinary way to begin our year together! Our Annual Conference in New Orleans brought the spirit of NAWJ to life through learning, friendship, and a shared commitment to justice. Gathered at The Roosevelt New Orleans, October 15–17, we embraced the conference theme, “Rooted in Justice, Rising in Rhythm,” and returned home with renewed energy for the work ahead.
From educational programming exploring judicial wellness and emerging technology to the celebration at our Gala, the conference offered opportunities to grow professionally and reconnect personally. Most meaningful to me was the chance to spend time with colleagues who understand both the privilege and the responsibilities of judicial service.
My heartfelt thanks go to Judge Bernadette D’Souza and Judge Nannette Brown for their work on this wonderful conference; Executive Director Laurie Denham, Brian Gorg, Janelle Mihoc, and Emma Armstrong; our Board of Directors; and everyone who contributed to its success. I am especially grateful to our outgoing President, Judge Pamela Washington, whose leadership and commitment to “Building Bridges, Strengthening Ties” have provided a strong foundation for the coming year.
Taking the oath as NAWJ’s 47th President was a profound honor. Throughout my judicial career, this organization has been a source of encouragement, friendship, and inspiration. I am grateful for your trust and excited to serve alongside you.
My presidential theme, “Justice Through Leadership: Strengthening Public Trust in the Courts,” reflects a responsibility we share. Our guiding commitment is simple: “Leading with Integrity. Inspiring Public Confidence.”
Together, we will focus on three priorities:
- Promoting judicial independence and the rule of law through civic education and thoughtful public engagement.
- Supporting judges facing increasing public scrutiny and security concerns through meaningful connections, practical resources, and a willingness to listen.
- Strengthening partnerships with bar associations, educators, and civic organizations to build understanding of the courts and confidence in our justice system.
Each of us has something valuable to contribute. I invite you to join a committee, mentor a colleague, welcome a new member, speak with students, or bring forward an idea for a community partnership. Please share your interests and suggestions with me. Your experiences will help shape our work.
Let us carry the energy of New Orleans into our courtrooms, communities, and relationships with one another. I look forward to a productive year grounded in service, strengthened by friendship, and guided by our shared commitment to justice.
With gratitude,
Heather A. Welch
