Judge Lisa James-Beavers is a Superior Court Judge serving in the Chancery Division Family Part in the Burlington County vicinage. She was appointed in December 2019 by Governor Phil Murphy. She is currently the lead judge for the Children in Court docket that handles cases of child abuse and neglect. Before that assignment, she heard matrimonial and domestic violence cases in the Family Part. Prior to her appointment to the Superior Court, she was Acting Director and Chief Administrative Law Judge at the Office of Administrative Law. She had been appointed an Administrative Law Judge in 2007 by Governor Corzine.
Before her appointment, Judge James-Beavers served as Executive Director of the School Ethics Commission in the New Jersey Department of Education. She had previously been an associate at the law firm Hill Wallack, P.C., where she concentrated in school law and insurance litigation. She began her legal career as a Deputy Attorney General in the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Law.
Judge James-Beavers was named Professional Lawyer of the Year by the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey and the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism. She just ended her term as a subcommittee chair in the Supreme Court Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement. She is former president of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Judge James-Beavers received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and her Juris Doctorate from Charles Widger School of Law (formerly Villanova University School of Law). She is a member of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bars.
